Please Respond to my Web Site

I used to have my email address linked on every page in my site. I've discovered (the hard way) that unscrupulous people build up databases of addresses automatically by "crawling" among Web sites looking for such addresses as mine included in them. As a result, I've been inundated by garbage spam, trying to sell me everything from sex creams to mortgages to earth-moving equipment.

The software that looks for addresses searches for the form "xxx@xxx.xxx" and harvests them into their gigantic databases. I'm told that I can defeat such searches by using a different form for my address. Therefore, I have "secretly encoded" my email address below. It's readable by people, but not by the machines.

I earnestly solicit your responses to what I've written here, whether positive, negative or neutral. If you do respond, please tell me what page you've been reading (it's awfully frustrating to read "Bravo!" but not know what essay it refers to).

I promise to reply to you unless you tell me not to. I also promise that I won't pass your email address on to anyone else without your expressed permission.

With all that said, here's my email address. You'll have to type it out, of course.

It's not likely that this will end my spam flood, but it may cut it down some. I also have a new policy of complaining to internet service providers when I receive spam. It doesn't say much for my trust level, does it? I'm hoping that as attrition decreases the amount of unwanted email in my Inbox, I can return to a more gracious state.

Incidentally, if you want to know more about how to deal with spam, here's a link to one URL you might try:

Thank you.
